Question 1 , What is obsidian?

According to Wikipedia,

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.

Obsidian is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, where the chemical composition (high silica content) induces a high degree of viscosity and polymerization of the lava. The inhibition of atomic diffusion through this highly viscous and polymerized lava explains the lack of crystal growth. Obsidian is hard and brittle and therefore fractures with very sharp edges. In the past it was used to manufacture cutting and piercing tools and it has been used experimentally as surgical scalpel blades.

Yes! Actually Obsidian is natural glass, just like crystal！

Question 2, Is Obsidian expensive?

Obsidian is cheap! There is too much volcano now and also in the past. Where there is a volcano, there is obsidian. So don’t compare obsidian with other gemstones.

Question 3, Is there any fake Obsidian？

It depends on how to define FAKE. If it is made of black plastic, definitely it is fake! It is not even a rock! But please be careful about artificial obsidian. For natural obsidian is already anywhere in the world, but to reduce the cost to carve into a product, great Chinese invent artificial obsidian based on obsidian’s physical property(natural glass). Instead of the high cost to carve, Chinese slip casting of artificial liquid glass into the mold and make obsidian into the batch process. Yes, they are still glass, but artificial.

The funny thing is, Chinese gemologists and obsidian fans also figure out how to distinguish natural obsidian from an artificial glass. Obsidian is a kind of natural stone, just like a jasper, it would be flawed if look closely.

The most obvious difference between natural and artificial obsidian is color. As natural glass created by the volcano, it is actually semitransparent. When putting a light behind, natural obsidian has special yellow-green color, while artificial obsidian is blue(p2), auburn(p3) or even opaque(p4).
